The future. It is hard to predict what the outcome will be, but many believe that when it comes to music and entertainment, DJ Yoshi is it. Born: Eric De Torres on July 3, 1981, the twenty-three year old Filipino has achieved goals and surpassed his potential to become a complete package. His mixtapes are heard by thousands, voice by millions. But where did DJ Yoshi emerge? How did this young man become a commodity? After moving from Jersey City to the suburbs in 1986, Eric was cultured by his parents in the musical world. Being away from the “urban” influence, other musical forms presented themselves to him. He quickly became fond of playing the: piano, trumpet and guitar; piano recitals and state competitions were the norm. His dedication and appreciation of each instrument led him to become a “master musician” in both the piano and trumpet by the age of 13! His musical background would prove to be the foundation of understanding the art of turntable/vinyl manipulation. After graduating grammar school, Eric earned extra money by carrying equipment for his older brother, Marlon. During one of the gigs, while his brother took a break, he noticed the record was wearing out. Learning how to DJ from studying his brother and watching videos, it was inevitable that he too would touch the turntables in public. Eric carefully selected the club hit: “Follow Me (Aly-Us) and mixed it in with ease. One mix became two. Two turned into three, and the rest is history. July 1995 was the birth of “DJ Yoshi.” During his tenure in high school, Yoshi utilized his environment to gain local recognition: playing at house parties and small venues. In March of ’97 DJ Yoshi became a household name within the Asian/Filipino Community. At the tender age of 15, his talented landed him a gig at his first club: El Flamingos (NYC). His performance that night shot him to the top of the list of young aspiring DJ’s. He knew how to sell himself: promoting and eventually hiring a street promotions team of his own to solicit each event that he was involved with. By 1998, DJ Yoshi was headlining at clubs all over the eastern seaboard. Late in ’98, his promotional know-how landed him a position of organizing entertainment and DJ’ing at the first ever import car show in the New York area. Since then, Yoshi has been highlighted as the Main DJ for majority of the import car shows around the world! It was this that enabled him to strike a deal with Pepsi to provide entertainment for the company at select events! For the import enthusiast, one has probably witnessed DJ Yoshi playing breaks for the b-boy/b-girl battles or hosting the MC Battles on the Pepsi Street Motion Tour Stage at Hot Import Nights/Daze. With the club scene on lock, the next goal that Yoshi set was to step into the “mixtape game.” He collaborated with mentor DJ Phillee Blunt to bring out releases such as: Double Impact, 4Play, 4Play 2K, Dimensions, and Phonography. Since the release of Double Impact in ’98, over 100,000 total units of his collection have been distributed across the globe. Though he enjoys success, the drive still remains. His mixes have been requested by corporations, dance teams and the street. His hard work awarded him with the prestigious nomination” Best New Mixtape DJ“during Justo’s 7th Annual Mixtape Awards in ’02! This award show has yielded talent such as: DJ Clue, Kay Slay, Brucie B, Clinton Sparks, and DJ’s Echo & Vice. Although he did not win the award, it benefited Yoshi by driving him to work harder on his game. In October of 2002 respected radio personality/consultant Lee Cadena commissioned Yoshi to produce a cross-over mix segment for the LEEssential Elements CD. The Mixtape featured Yoshi along with: K-Sly(KKBT), J-Tyme(KUGS) and DJ Kut(WWPR). The CD was distributed nationwide by respected industry trade publication, the Urban Network Magazine. Finally in 2002, his ability to help, knowledge and passion for the industry and artists led him to become a member of the Tech.Nitions, an elite group of record-breaking DJ’s and industry members! It has been six years since DJ Yoshi stepped through the doors of WRNU and began his college radio show. It is clear that he is destined to be the next great radio DJ/Personality. He is capable of being his own producer, board-operator and programmer. With ease, he mixes a song, adjusts a guest’s microphone, takes a request and is back in time for the next mix. His radio show has been featured three times in the Network Magazine/Urban Network, three times in Radio & Records Magazines, numerous times on RapAttackLives.Com and the Industry Insider. In May of 2003, he was selected as DJ of the Month by Platinum Queens Entertainment: a West Coast Based Operation! His show has led to multiple nominations at award shows including: Hustler of the Year – 2003 Tech.Nition Awards Rookie DJ of the Year: 2003 Tech.Nition Awards College Radio DJ of 2004: Urban Network. Yoshi received the honor of becoming the 2003 Tech.Nition Rookie of the Year and the UN’s 2004 College Radio DJ of the Year! His college mixshow has gained global recognition via the internet with requests pouring in from: San Francisco, Australia, Europe, the Philippines, Canada, and Japan! The preamble to commercial radio had begun. In 2003 and 2004, DJ Yoshi participated in various mixmaster weekends on stations such as: KSVP, WWLD, WIZF, and WKQB. It comes as no surprise that the audience and station executives gave positive responses on his mixes. Yoshi also became a member of the Saturday Night Mix Squad on West Virginia’s 98.7 WRVZ The Beat. The 11PM – 4AM Slot is shared by DJ’s: Wicked, Wally Sparks, & Chonz! On the college level, WOWL expressed their interest to syndicated Yoshi’s College Broadcast in the southern Florida market. Yoshi also has two syndication deals that currently have his mixshow airing in over twenty countries and seven markets stateside. After making this information public at a Sony Music Meet and Greet, DJ Splif jokingly coined Yoshi: “The Funk Master Flex of College Radio.” His ability to relate to a wide demographic coupled with his finely-tuned-skills has enabled him to play with DJ greats such as: Q-Bert, X-Ecutioners, Beat Junkies, Big Cap, Funkmaster Flex, Mister Cee, DJ Envy and Evil D. More impressing than that, Yoshi has rocked the turntables at shows with artists like: D.M.C, Buckshot, Amerie, Mariah Carey, Joe Budden, Jin, A+, GURU, Blacksheep, The Clipse, T.I., Mike Jones, Lil Flip, Fabolous, Bun B, and Wayne Wonder. His appeal to the masses and understanding of live entertainment helped Yoshi become The Official DJ of the NBA’s NJ Nets from 2003 - 2005. During his tenure Nets fans gravitated to the excitement of Yoshi spinning from the NJ Nets Sound Stage, taking requests, filming All Net TV skits, spicing up Public Announcements, and being an overall presence within the arena! His ability to please tens of thousands on any given night coupled with his charisma and fan appeal made him a true force. Furthermore, he proved his ability to pick and break music by setting 2005’s season introduction song as T.I.’s “Bring Em Out,” which did not hit the air waves until three months after the basketball season started. 2006 has nothing but potential for DJ Yoshi. He recently was chosen by Jermaine Dupri to be a part of the So So Def DJ’s family; he has also founded the Sports Entertainment DJ’s organization. With confirmed appearances on radio, TV, magazines, advertisements and the global tour later in the year, DJ Yoshi has proven to live up to his potential and plans to play a part in the future of entertainment.
